Jen Mahon - "Lodestone" - 2005
Considerable time was spent in the editing room, tweaking the cadence or inflection of the spoken parts, removing lip-sounds and loud breaths, and adjusting for un-even loudness. This kind of detail work is all about finesse. When it is done well, you don't even notice the changes in the final product -- but it sounds "better". Spoken material is particularly exposed so it is important for every little thing to be as close to perfect as possible.
After the first round of editing, we produced a "pre-production proof" CD for Jen. This contained every track she originally recorded, each edited clean, for her review. She came back to us with a few requests for changes and the final selections & sequence for the finished product. Authentic Voices put the final polish on the selected tracks and produced the master CD and 30 copies for distribution.
About the work...
Jen Mahon had been thinking about doing a CD project for some time. Our chief engineer, a poet in his own right, met her at the Worcester Poet's Asylum and invited her to record with us. We negotiated a barter for most of the services performed. Jen made ceramic bowls and cups in trade for studio time.

Jen Mahon is a veterinary critical care nurse, poet, potter, and all-around fabulous crazy woman.
